Quotation of the Week:

"What a pity flowers can utter no sound! - A singing rose, a whispering violet, a murmuring honeysuckle, - oh, what a rare and exquisite miracle would these be!"

Have you looked out over your yard and wondered, "What should I plant here," or, "How do I begin to re-design my landscaping?" Would you like the colorful casualness of an English scatter garden, or the serenity of a well-manicured Japanese tea garden, but don't know if these ideas are feasible?

Perhaps you are unsure whether azaleas need sun or shade, or why your citrus is not doing well. Wegman’s Consulting Service has been designed to answer these questions and more.

Wegman's has a staff of experts led by Ed Holm, our resident consultant for ornamental horticulture, who will come to your home for a personal consultation. Mr. Ed will spend time evaluating your landscape needs and give you suggestions to make the kind of garden setting you have dreamed of a reality.

The service can range from giving a suggestion for an entire landscape including a sketch with plant suggestions, to helping with a diagnosing a "sick" plant. The cost of a consultation is $75.00 per hour. The Consultation Service is available by calling Wegman's at 650-368-5908 and leaving a message for Mr. Ed to set up an appointment with you.

Wegman’s has a history of commitment, quality, and customer service. The additional benefit of using Wegman’s Consulting Service is that you can come into the nursery and look at the suggested plants. Also, we are able to order plants if they are not in our vast inventory so that your garden will be as unique and personal as you are!

Plant your roses where they will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight. Roses prefer slightly acidic soils, best achieved by using acidic soil amendments when planting, and mulching yearly. To plant, dig a hole about 2 feet wide and deep and incorporate one-third Nurseryman’s Rose Planting Mix or Gold Rush or Bumper Crop with your native soil; then add Master Nursery Master Start to this soil. Give regular, deep root watering. To fertilize use Master Nursery Rose & Flower Food or Dr. Earth Rose & Flower Fertilizer monthly from February to September to supply nutrients for developing roots and stems.

MR. ED’S TIPS:

Bare root rose season is long gone but many of those roses were potted up in five gallon containers six weeks ago; they are absolutely gorgeous, according to Mr. Ed. All of them are budded, a few are already in bloom and there is not a sign of any disease or insect pests. They have been sprayed twice with sulfur (Safer Brand Garden Fungicide) and fertilized twice with Master Nursery Rose and Flower Food. We’ve never had roses that looked this good.

For long-stemmed cutting roses choose a Hybrid Tea variety. In your rose garden, these should be planted in the back of the bed. For masses of color, plant Floribundas (landscape roses) in the foreground. The Floribundas have shorter stems but will make a charming nosegay in a small vase.

There is a color for everyone's taste: pure white, through cream, yellow, pink, salmon, lavender, several shades of red and some so dark, they are almost black.

Other possible choices to fill your rose hunger are tree roses, climbing roses, Grandifloras, carpet roses and Rugosa roses. If you have a space that gets five or six hours of sun per day, you can and should have some roses. Come in and look at our beauties.

Paula Allen is a CCN Pro and one of Wegman’s outdoor plant experts. Paula works with perennials and shrubs. Paula has made your plant selection process easier by arranging our outdoor section by color. Currently all the pink flowering plants are together, the yellow flowering, white flowering and so on. By displaying the plants in the nursery in this manner we hope that designing the palette of your garden will be just that much easier and fun! You will also be introduced to textures and type of plants that perhaps you had not considered. Just another idea from the Wegman Experts.
