MR. ED’S TIPS:

Harvesting oranges the 2nd year:

This tip was passed on from a Portuguese gardener who brought it from the markets of Portugal. Oranges were often displayed in two poles, one much sweeter and more expensive than the other. The sweetest oranges had been left on the tree for two years! The current crop is left alone to continue to sweeten during the second year. Mr. Ed tried this on an orange tree in Woodside and the old gardener was 100% correct! So, if you want your oranges to be as sweet as possible, don’t harvest them until the second year. The added bonus is that the tree serves as an outstanding ornamental with dark green leaves and orange fruit all year long.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion for this delicate and exotic orchid. Phalaenopsis Orchids combine the exquisite color range of orchids with gracefully arching stalks. Your special Valentine will enjoy the flowers on the Phalaenopsis unfolding for weeks.

Phalaenopsis Orchids are one of the most commonly grown ‘indoor orchids.’ This is the orchid with two to six wide, opposite leaves and a single long flower stalk with numerous blooms. Phalaenopsis is often called a Moth Orchid because the delicate flowers resemble butterflies. These orchids definitely require indoor temperatures but often do not get enough light to bloom regularly. Also, the humidity may get very low in the winter causing the blossoms to drop off. Otherwise, most of the care is the same as for Cymbidiums. They will probably have to be no further than 6 to 12 inches from a window where they get three to four hours of filtered sun.

There are many other types of orchids available, all of which make wonderful gift. If you want a true challenge, try a Vanilla Orchid. This orchid has a vine-like growth habit and after it blooms, it develops a long ugly pod called a vanilla bean. Yes the true, natural vanilla is an orchid product!

Daphne odoras do best in morning sun and afternoon shade. Give it well-draining soil (amend with compost). During summer, water only as often as needed to keep it alive. Wegman’s recommendation is to never have your Daphne on an automatic sprinkler system.

Growing Conditions
• Morning sun
• Plant high in organic, well-draining soil
• Do not over-water in summer, especially in clay soil

Size and Shape
• Evergreen
• About 3 feet tall (4 if you're lucky)
• Spreads to 4 feet or wider
• Nice rounded shape--prune to maintain shape after blooming

Flowers
• Flowers in February and March
• Flowers are pink to purple in clusters at end of branches
• Extremely pleasant fragrance

Trivia Question: The plant that gives us cilantro also gives us what other herb?

Question, answer, and winner from January 22nd edition:

Question: What bird has such a long tail that, when taking flight from a branch, it must launch itself backwards in order to avoid ripping the tail to shreds?

Answer:
The male Resplendent Quetzal of Central America has such a long tail that, when taking flight from a branch, it must launch itself backwards in order to avoid ripping its tail to shreds. The Quetzal, an endangered species, adorns the Guatemalan flag.

Arugula Salad with Beets and Goat Cheese

What You'll Need:

Salad Ingredients

  • Beets--(boiled until a fork easily goes in them, about an hour), peeled, sliced into strips
  • Fresh arugula--rinsed, patted dry with a paper towel
  • Goat cheese--chèvre
  • Walnuts--chopped

Dressing ingredients

  • Olive oil
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Dry powdered mustard
  • Sugar
  • Salt and pepper

Step by Step:

  • The amount of ingredients depends on how many people you are serving and how much salad you intend to serve them. The important thing is that this is a good blend of flavors. I didn't try tossing this salad; each plate was composed individually.
  • The dressing for three individual salads was 1/4 cup of olive oil, the juice of 1/2 lemon, 1/4 teaspoon of powdered mustard, 3/4 teaspoon of sugar, a dash or two of salt and pepper. These are only approximate measurements. It is all to your taste.
  • Assemble the salad according to how much you want: a handful of arugula leaves, a few beet juliennes, some crumbled goat cheese, garnish with chopped walnuts. Use a vinaigrette salad dressing or the dressing ingredients above.
